The procedure imitating the Russian presidential election, which took place on 15-17 March 2024 under the conditions of an unprecedented restriction of civil and political rights, cannot be considered or called an election, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis noted.

“A law cannot arise from illegal actions, and coercion, oppression and rigging cannot give rise to respected international legitimacy. That is why we do not consider and do not call this fake procedure an election, because unfortunately it looks more like a tragic farce," Landsbergis said.

According to the head of Lithuanian diplomacy, the procedure was neither fair nor free, nor did it comply with any universally accepted standards of democracy and the rule of law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement on Monday, read the full statement here.
