In an extraordinary meeting on 16 March, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided, in the context of the procedure launched under Article 8 of the Statute of the Council of Europe, to expel the Russian Federation from the Council of Europe as from today due to its military aggression against Ukraine.

“Russia has long not deserved a place in this honourable organisation. Putin's regime proved many times by committing heinous crimes and serious violations of human rights and international agreements that its policy has nothing to do with the Council of Europe's core values and principles,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis. The Foreign Minister also expressed the hope that one day a democratic, peaceful and free Russia would be able to return to this organisation.
