Schengen visas

Required documents for a Schengen visa

General information

The application and supporting documents should be personally submitted at the Consulate General. Please schedule an appointment on-line (https://konsreg.urm.lt/visit/register/us3). Applications submitted by mail are not accepted.

Applications should be lodged no more than 90 days and no less than 15 days before the start of the intended visit. In general, applications are decided on within 15 calendar days of the date of the lodging of an application.

The applicant should submit the application to the General Consulate of Lithuania in New York, if (s)he legally resides in the U.S. (Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont) and if:

  • Lithuania is the sole destination of the visit(s); OR
  • if the visit includes more than one destination, Lithuania is the main destination of the visit(s) in terms of the length or purpose of stay; OR
  • if no main destination can be determined, the applicant intend's to cross Lithuania's external border in order to enter the territory of the Member States.

An alien applying for a Schengen visa shall submit:

  1. a completed and signed application form. Minors submit an application form signed by a person exercising permanent or temporary parental authority or legal guardianship.
  2. a valid travel document. Its validity shall extend at least three months after the (last) intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen Member States. A travel document shall contain at least two blank pages and it shall have been issued within the previous ten years.
  3. a colour photo corresponding to the age of an applicant (Photograph Guidelines - http://keliauk.urm.lt/uploads/default/documents/Annex_A-Photograph_Guidelines.pdf) ;
  4. a visa fee. The visa fee is waived for:
    • children under 12 years;
    • school pupils, students, postgraduate students and accompanying teachers who undertake stays for the purpose of study or educational training;
    • family members of a citizen of the European Union or a citizen of a Member State of the European Free Trade Association, where such family members are nationals of third countries family members of EU citizens, as well as to the family members of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania;
    • researchers from third countries travelling for the purpose of carrying out scientific research;
    • representatives of non-profit organisations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organised by non-profit organisations; holders of diplomatic and service passports;
    • participants aged 25 years or less in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events, organised by non-profit organisations;
    • aliens arriving to the Republic of Lithuania to participate in official meetings organised by the President of the Republic, the Seimas, the Government or ministries;
    • aliens travelling to visit a seriously ill close relative or a family member, or to the funeral of a close relative or a family member, or twice a year to visit the grave of a close relative or a family member in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania;
    • persons of Lithuanian origin;
    • persons who have retained the right to the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania;
    • aliens holding diplomatic or service passports or equivalent travel documents.
  5. supporting documents:
  • proof of legal residence in the USA and re-entry document ("green card", valid US resident visa). The US residence permit or visa should be valid at least three months beyond the intended departure from the territory of the Member States;
  • documents indicating the purpose of the journey:
    • Visiting friends: invitation letter from friend/relative, copy of ID of inviting friend/relative.
    • Business: invitation letter from the business partner specifying the nature of the business; reference letter from employer; confirmed accommodation;
    • Students, reseachers: certificate from the receiving institution on the length and purpose of stay; Certificate from Home institution on enrolment (student cards only are not sufficient); and confirmed accommodation
  • proof of travel arrangements (flight (roundtrip)/travel reservations or other proof of intended transport and full itinerary);
  • proof of accommodation - evidence of hotel bookings or travel plans for the entire Schengen area (confirmed hotel reservations, stating name, address and telephone number of the hotel, including confirmation number).
  • Proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the intended journey:
    • Bank account statement(s) during the last three months (Bank statements must show the name and address of owner(s). Electronic printouts are accepted.); proof of regular income e.g. pay slips of the last three months;
    • OR if self-employed (tax return from previous fiscal year or proof of previous economic activity and of an income during previous fiscal year);
    • OR if retired (e.g. copy of pension certificate or a letter of previous employer or a pension check stub or confirmation from the responsible authority about the amount of pension);
    • In case of business, if applicable, letter stating that all expenses are fully covered by (e.g. a written proof that the inviting employer/company pays the expenses or alternative the sending employer/company pays for all expenses);
    • In case of students/researchers, if applicable, letter stating that all expenses are fully covered by;
    • If the applicant is minor and travels without parents or with one parent: officially recognized statement from both parents (this condition shall not apply if there is only a single parent or he/she holds the parental authority alone) or legal guardian authorizing the child to travel and covering the costs with evidence on the existence of the financial coverage.
  • information enabling an assessment of the applicant’s intention to leave the territory of the Member States before the expiry of the visa applied for;
  1. a document, proving the possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance to cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death during the stay(s) on the territory of the Member States with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. When applying for a multiple entries visa, a document proving the possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance covering the period of the first intended visit shall be submitted. In addition, an applicant shall sign the statement, set out in the application form, declaring that he/she is aware of the need to be in possession of travel medical insurance for subsequent stays. Attention: please make sure that your insurance document clearly states that it corresponds to all requirements for Schengen visa (minimum coverage, repatriation, validity in all Schengen countries).
