On 21 September in New York, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis acquainted representatives from Jewish organizations with Lithuania’s efforts to perpetuate Holocaust remembrance and to preserve the Jewish cultural heritage when compensating for the property of Lithuanian Jewish religious communities. The meeting was attended by representatives from the American Jewish Committee, World Jewish Congress, B’nai B’rith and other Jewish organizations. A.Ažubalis informed that on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust in Lithuania, the Parliament (Seimas) declared 2011 as the Year of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust in Lithuania, and the Government of Lithuania adopted a comprehensive programme of the above-mentioned commemorative events and projects dedicated to the perpetuation of remembrance and education. “Cultural events aimed to promote tolerance and to revive the historical and cultural heritage of the Lithuanian Jews – Litvaks - are especially significant to historical memory. Historical Jewish Ghetto fragments of Vilnius are restored, concerts presenting Jewish compositions are organized, books are published, and this is just one part of the comprehensive programme for this year,” said A.Ažubalis. The meeting focused on the Law on Good Will Compensation for the Property of Jewish Religious Communities that was recently adopted by the Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania. Representatives from Jewish organizations thanked the Lithuanian Foreign Minister for the good will, which the country had demonstrated when addressing the issue of compensation for the property of Lithuanian Jewish religious communities. The Minister also presented the newest initiatives of the Government of Lithuania to preserve and to perpetuate the Jewish cultural heritage of Lithuania, and discussed important issues of cooperation. |
