WESTERN UNION OPENS REGIONAL CENTRE IN VILNIUS

On 5 May the global money transfer giant Western Union opened its European Regional Operating Centre in Vilnius.

“This outstanding American company's choice of Lithuania to host its operations in Europe confirms that Lithuania has arrived on the international commercial scene as an open, competitive, free market economy, and one which offers significant opportunities for American business,” Anne E. Derse, US Ambassador to Lithuania, noted in her opening speech.

Western Union has exceeded its plans by investing more than planned and has already employed some 460 people. “We have chosen Lithuania because we looked for an optimal environment – highly qualified and educated people – and we found that. We also found a stable economic situation. The financial aid was very important, but that wasn’t the key factor,” the Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe at Western Union Konrad Olszaniecki said in a press conference after the opening ceremony.

“As I joked today it should be a wake-up call for the company’s competitors, that Lithuania is actually a good place to set up such centers,” Pirme Minister Andrius Kubilius said in the press conference.

Western Union joined the club of other recent foreign investors in Lithuania such as Barclays Bank of the UK, Computer Sciences Corporation of the US, Mirror Accounting of Norway, Ideal Invent Technologies of India etc.
